Kruger National Park (KNP) Management would like to caution visitors to the Park to take precautionary measures against Malaria before visiting the Park, although classified as a low risk area but is situated in a malaria area. Due to the heavy rain received this year, there are pools of water in abundance everywhere and the Park is experiencing Malaria cases especially in the northern part of the Park.
“Malaria seems to be on the brink of an outbreak lately despite the fact that we almost in winter now with some of the country’s provinces reporting hundreds of people who have been admitted and tested positive for the disease in hospitals. We therefore would like to advise visitors to take the necessary precautions which include the use of prophylaxes and vaccinations in consultation with their doctors to prevent the possibility of contracting Malaria as Kruger National Park is known to be one of the Malaria endemic areas in this country,” said the SANParks Acting Head of Communications, William Mabasa.
By using repellants on the skin, keeping the gauze door and windows close and also ensuring these are not broken as well as spraying the inside of the hut/bungalow with insecticide, the risk of Malaria in the Park can be reduced significantly.
Mabasa also noted that “although Malaria can be contracted at any time of the year the Malaria season in this country is October to April, with March and April the highest risk period; however this year seems to be slightly different. With winter approaching, mosquitoes which are carriers of the parasite causing Malaria, should begin to hibernate and the situation shall possibly improve”.
There are medical doctors permanently based in Skukuza, Kruger National Park’s main camp and the public can also consult them for information and advice prior to their visit to the Park on telephone number +27 13 735 5638.

Minister of Environmental Affairs welcomes the declaration of the Garden Route as an Unesco Biosphere Reserve
03 July 2017
15 June 2017
The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Dr Edna Molewa, has welcomed the approval of the Garden Route as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve.
Unesco members voted in favour of the inclusion of the Garden Route as a Biosphere reserve at a meeting in Paris, France, on 14 June 2017.
“The positive response to the application to declare the Garden Route a biosphere reserve is most encouraging, not just for us, as a country, but also for the people of the region,” said Minister Molewa.
“The Garden Route, one of South Africa’s prime tourism regions, is an area rich in terrestrial, coastal and marine ecosystems where conservation of the rich biodiverse region is ably reconciled with sustainable use practices,” the Minister added.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) states that biosphere reserves are nominated by national governments and remain under the sovereign jurisdiction of the states where they are located. Their status is internationally recognised. The Garden Route Biosphere Reserve (GRBR) is the ninth such reserve to be declared in South Africa.
The Garden Route Biosphere Reserve is located within the Cape Floristic biodiversity hotspot region along the southern coast of part of the country. With a total area of 698,363ha (212,375 ha core, 288,032 ha buffer, 197,956 ha transition) and a population of 450,624 people. The area includes the Tsitsikamma, Goukamma and Robberg Marine protected areas, Wilderness Lake Ramsar site, Garden Route National Park and two components of the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas World Heritage site: the Nelson Bay Cave and the Langkloof Valley, this latter being critically endangered.
The municipalities included in the Biosphere Reserve are Eden and Sarah Baartman District municipalities as well as George, Knysna, Bitou, Kouga, and Koukamma,.local municipalities. All of these municipalities have been consulted in the establishment process and engagements are underway to include the Biosphere Reserve initiative in their Integrated Development Plans.
Linked to the conservation related activities, the development objectives of the GRBR are to promote growth in employment, training and entrepreneurial endeavours, contribute to poverty alleviation and the development of sustainable livelihood options for disadvantaged communities, and to encourage sustainable biodiversity-based businesses and their contribution to the green economy on the Garden Route.
Several development opportunities have arisen from the desire to conserve the natural environment within the GRBR. The clearing of alien vegetation has substantial socio-economic benefits for the region in the form of several government-sponsored and endorsed initiatives such as Working for Water, Working for Wetlands, and Working on Fire, all of which are involved in alien vegetation eradication and fire management in the GRBR. These initiatives provide employment and facilitate skills development and the exchange of ideas between the different stakeholder groups. For example, the vegetation cleared can be made available to small businesses or entrepreneurs for making furniture, crafting, making charcoal, sold as fire wood.
The official launch of the Garden Route Biosphere Reserve will take place later in the year.

South African National Parks (SANParks) has to date not received formal notice that employees affiliated to the Health and Other Service Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (HOSPERSA) will embark on a possible labour strike in the coming days, following a negotiation deadlock with regards to salary increases.
This is according to SANParks Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Fundisile Mketeni, who said the country’s conservation and tourism leader has not received a formal notice of the imminent strike from HOSPERSA in terms of the Labour Relations Act, indicating that the members of the union intend embarking on strike action. “Instead, on 11th July 2017, SANParks met with all recognized unions and HOSPERSA requested that strike and picketing rules be developed. Management agreed and undertook to do so and meet with the said union in the coming week.”
Mketeni said the news came as a surprise because the meeting to agree on the strike and picketing rules has not taken place as yet. “Should the union continue with its threats, those employees who decide to embark on strike action would not be allowed to picket on SANParks’ premises without an agreement or permission and in an effort to resolve the impasse we further urge the union to accept management’s offer of 6% plus 1% pay progress which totals to a 7% adjustment since negotiations were concluded.”
In its statement, HOSPERSA insinuated that a profit amounting to R1,29 billion was realized in the last financial year, therefore a nine percent (9%) salary increase in their view is warranted. “We would like to put it on record that the union should take cognisance of the operational overheads which includes, staff remunerations; conservation operations and tourism plant maintenance amongst many of SANParks’ financial commitments,” said Mketeni.
He stated that, accordingly our offer provides a solution which is above the current CPI. “You will note that the CPI for April and May was at 5.3 percent and 5.4 percent respectively. Hence, the six percent (6%) plus one percent (1%) pay progression is reasonable.”
He said despite HOSPERSA’s pronouncement that all operations will be disrupted at various parks, SANParks would like to reassure members of the public that in the event of strike contingency plans will be activated to ensure that service is not interrupted and our visitors are safe. “We hope that sanity will prevail and our employees will not heed to the HOSPERSA call,” concludes Mketeni.

SANParks facilities unaffected by strike
South African National Parks (SANParks) management has confirmed that all employees who were scheduled to report for duty have done so despite a notice to strike which was served by the Health and Other Service Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (HOSPERSA).
“We can confirm that all our parks have full complement of staff despite the notice that we received from HOSPERSA intending to embark on industrial action from today 17 July 2017.We are constantly monitoring the situation and all our contingency plans are in place. We would like to encourage our visitors and those wishing to travel to any of our parks to continue with their plans as we aim to ensure that they enjoy their stay. We have received a request for parties to meet from the CCMA tomorrow and are hopeful that the impasse will be resolved. We are also waiting for the finalisation of picketing rules” concluded SANParks Head of Communications Janine Raftopoulos.
HOSPERSA is demanding a 9% increase for their members while SANParks is offering 6% salary adjustment and a 1% pay progression with a total offer of 7%. Though the strike is protected, the “no work no pay” rule will apply to those who take part in the industrial action.

South African National Parks (SANParks) announced today that the holiday bookings for June and July 2018 will now open on 1 August 2017 as opposed to 25 July 2017 as originally planned.
This according to SANParks Head of Communications Janine Raftopoulos, who said the change of date to 1 August is due to a possible protected strike by some members of staff. “SANParks is still locked in talks with the union representing the majority of staff and a deadline has been set for Monday, 24 July 2017 to agree on a settlement and in anticipation of any disagreements between the two parties – a change of date had to be considered.”
SANParks, therefore would like to apologise to all guests for any inconvenience caused due to this unfortunate situation. “We want to give confidence to all guests that a resolution will be reached soon and all operations will be back to normal.”
The bookings will open on 1 August from 07h30 for the call centres and email bookings. Online bookings will open on 2 August 2016 as per usual.

Kruger National Park (KNP) is currently implementing additional gate access control systems at its entrance gates in the Southern part of the Park, which will require that as from 1 September 2017, all visitors who are 18 years old and above must produce positive identity document for scanning in order to gain access. For non-South African visitors, they must produce passports but South African driver’s licence will also be acceptable.
The new system will assist with monitoring of people’s movement who enter and exit the Park, and will ensure that information related to any persons entering the park is centrally recorded and monitored.
“The system will apply to everybody including SANParks staff members, suppliers and other residents of the Park and is expected to improve on our proactive surveillance, early warning and detection. In our quest to continue to enhance security for both wildlife and visitors, we will continue to make use of appropriate security technology”; said the KNP’s Managing Executive, Glenn Phillips.
Visitors will still be required to go through their normal check-in or check-out at the gate receptions before proceeding to the security scanning process. Training for the security personnel on the upgraded system is underway in order to minimize the possible delays as soon as the new operation kicks-in.
We request that tour operators and ground handlers communicate this requirement with their guests.
“We recognise that we have to keep a very fine balance between imposing potentially anti-tourist friendly security apparatus whilst also ensuring the protection of both Tourists and Wildlife. We request the public to be patient during these very necessary security processes,” concluded Phillips.
