Hallo Foriker!

Gala

THE PRESS RELEASE

A reformed gangster, a fatalistic security guard, an affirmative action ‘success’ story, a disillusioned barfly and an inspirational voice from America, are among the colourful cast of Brent Palmer and Paul Leger’s ‘Corner Hope & Vrede’. A London trained actor and comedian, Palmer plays this motley mix of extra-ordinary locals and visitors, each with a bizarre, yet disturbingly real, take on their world. Although a hilarious comedy, Corner Hope & Vrede is also a keenly observed satirical peek into the lives of ordinary people trying to make sense of the incongruities presented by socio-political change, while still maintaining a sense of themselves, often by resorting to a betrayal of instinct and personal sense of truth. Liberation has come and gone, but for the ordinary men inhabiting Corner Hope & Vrede, survival and pride is a Laurel and Hardy exchange of absurdities, where humour always walks a few steps in front of uncertainty. As such the play is a wry and sensitive scratch on the everyday skin of the Newish South Africa. Crime, affirmative action, immigration, 10 years of democracy, Cape Town car guards and the Bush war on terror provide the satirical ingredients, and an original musical score provides the emotional rhythm, of this highly watchable one-man performance.
