Redclaw Crayfish is a harmful invader of freshwater systems, and it has been newly recorded in the Crocodile River in the Kruger National Park
The Redclaw crayfish is native to Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea but has been introduced around the world for aquaculture and the aquarium trade. Continental Africa has no native freshwater crayfish species, with the ecological equivalent being freshwater crabs. However, the first record of crayfish in Kruger was in February 2016, just below Van Graan Dam on the Crocodile River and the border of the park. These crayfish had previously been recorded upstream of the Crocodile River, and in high abundance throughout the Komati River, including at the confluence with the Crocodile River, so it is possible that they dispersed into Kruger from there.
Following this 2016 discovery, crayfish invasion was recognised as a major threat to the functioning of KNP rivers, requiring careful monitoring and control. Almost seven years later, in May 2023, we set crayfish traps in the Crocodile River at Crocodile Bridge, approximately 50 km downstream of Van Graan Dam, to establish how far crayfish have dispersed. Three Redclaw crayfish were captured, suggesting a downstream spread of about 7 km/year.
Crayfish invasions are a serious conservation and management concern as they negatively impact aquatic biota, including fish, crabs and both invertebrate and macrophyte biodiversity. Redclaw crayfish consume high numbers of fish fry and plant material, regardless of temperature, in comparison to native crabs. They also negatively affect fisheries through scavenging and destruction of fishing gear. In Lake Kariba, they cause losses to Zimbabwean fisheries of up to $512 352 a year. As with many invasive species, removal from a system is highly unlikely once the species is established, and as such, preventing and slowing spread is crucial during the early stages of an invasion.

South African National Parks (SANParks) and the Mpumalanga Parks and Tourism Agency (MTPA) undertook a physical assessment of the Kruger National Park (KNP) fence from Numbi Gate alongside communities adjacent to the park up to Matsulu on Saturday, 09 March 2024. The assessment was done after several reports of elephant venturing into the communities to feed, sparking fears of the wild animals causing damage to crops and injuring community members.
The team comprised scientists and conservation officials in the form of Section Rangers and Regional Rangers. Their observation concluded that there is a need to send technical teams to the area to finalise the scope of work and have a contractor on site from April 2024. The construction of the fence is expected to take at least eight months.
The initiation of this project is consistent with SANParks’ overall approach of building and solidifying relations with communities adjacent to national parks. Discussions with communities and key stakeholders are in the pipeline to co-develop the building program and construction. Engagements with communities and stakeholders are also intended to facilitate dialogue and guidance as well as buy-in to safeguard the fence from being vandalised.

South African National Parks (SANParks) welcomed another heavy sentence handed down by the Skukuza Regional Court, to a rhino poacher.
Mbongeni Ngobeni was convicted on six charges related to rhino poaching, a crime committed on 21 June 2016 in the Pretoriuskop Section of the Kruger National Park (KNP).
It was stated in court that the accused was arrested by field rangers who followed up on gunshots that were heard, and the spoor that was discovered next to a freshly killed rhino carcass. During the follow-up with the assistance of the K9 Unit, contact was made, and the convicted poacher was arrested and found in possession of a high-calibre hunting rifle whilst two of his accomplices managed to evade arrest.
Ngobeni was granted bail on 9 March 2019 but failed to appear for his trial. The court authorised a warrant for his arrest and information was received on 22 December 2023 of his whereabouts which led to his arrest. On 14 March 2024, he was convicted and sentenced as follows:
Ten (10) years imprisonment for hunting rhinoceros in a national park.
Five (5) years imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Two (2) years imprisonment for trespassing in a national park.
Four (4,) years imprisonment for possession of a firearm with the intent to commit a crime.
Four (4) years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit a crime.
Two (2) years imprisonment for possession of unlicensed ammunition.
One (1) year imprisonment for possession of a dangerous weapon.
The court ordered that the sentence on count 5 should run concurrently with count 1. Counts 4, 6, and 7 to also run concurrently, resulting in an effective 17-year jail sentence. The accused is automatically declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Meanwhile, the much-awaited trial of former KNP Regional Ranger, Rodney Landela and his co-accused, former State Veterinary employee, Kenneth Muchocho will get underway after the Magistrate indicated that there will be no postponement and that the trial will proceed as planned on 18 March 2024.

South African National Parks (SANParks) has begun welcoming visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) for the Easter Holidays. Visitors are urged to observe the rules of the park that are primarily intended to ensure safe and pleasant experiences.
KNP is expecting an increased number of visitors during these holidays as families pursue a relaxed time in nature to refresh and it is a time which coincides with school breaks.
KNP recorded high occupancy rates for both camping and accommodation, confirming the park’s place as a destination of choice for many. Gate quotas will be implemented for day visitors during the Easter Weekend and visitors are advised to book online ahead of their visit. Special attention is also drawn to operational times as it pertains to the gate quotas:
- Time slot 1: 06.00 to 08:00
- Time slot 2: 08:00 to 10:00
- Time slot 3: 10:00 onwards
Plans for increased visibility of both traffic officials and visitor management personnel to monitor speeding, after-hours travelling and general behaviour on the roads are being implemented. Management is urging visitors to cooperate with officials who will be on duty and to report unbecoming behaviour to the gate officials or call the emergency call centre number on the entry permits.
Visitors are urged to plan their trips and allow sufficient time to enjoy the bush, relax and arrive safely at their destination. Visitors are also urged not to temper with road signage such as the removal of road closure signs as such can pose a danger to other motorists who might enter prohibited parts of the park. Usage of roads in prohibited areas will result in the issue of fines. Visitors should consult reception and the gates for updated information on road closures or visit our social media platforms.

Dear valued guests
KNP Management would like to inform visitors to the park that, it is aware of the infestation of bats in some units at our rest camps. As a protected area, KNP is managing biodiversity as naturally as possible and as such has to find a delicate balance between wildlife and the many visitors that enjoy nature.
The infestation is seasonal between April and October and our scientists and conservation management teams are rolling out a project to minimise the bat infestation in a safe and humane manner. The proposed solutions include sealing unit roofs so that the mammals can't gain access to the buildings and other methods to discourage the animals from roosting on the verandas.
The project will commence on 08 April 2024 at Lower Sabie and move to other camps. Management apologises for any inconvenience and wishes all visitors a good safari experience over the Easter Holidays.
