South African National Parks (SANParks) today announced the arrests of five suspected rhino poachers in the Kruger National Park (KNP)’s Malelane Section in an intelligence-driven operation on Saturday, 23 November 2019.
The suspects were in possession of five fresh rhino horns, a high calibre hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment. The vehicle they were travelling in has also been impounded for further investigation.
The arrests followed the discovery of two fresh rhino carcasses in the section and were covered with grass and twigs to delay their discovery. The Section Ranger immediately deployed his rangers around the area to look for possible vehicles that might be ferrying the suspects.
A suspicious kombi with two visible passengers and three others, who were hiding, appeared not far from where the carcases were discovered. The permit in their possession was for two persons and the Ranger became more suspicious when he saw three others hiding out of sight.
He then instructed the driver to come out with hands in the air and to open the rear door which exposed the other passengers whom he loudly instructed to lie on the floor with the driver, he then handcuffed all three and quickly proceeded to arrest the fourth suspect who then pointed out the fifth suspect whose gun was pointing at the Section Ranger but failed to pull the trigger. The Section Ranger then called for backup after effecting, the arrests.
The suspects are in custody and SANParks is not ruling out further arrests. They will appear in court to face rhino poaching related charges in due course.
The CEO of SANParks, Fundisile Mketeni has congratulated the team on the arrests and continued to warn criminals that KNP is ready to stop them in their tracks “We are thankful that one Ranger managed to subdue five criminals without any harm unto himself and continue to warn those who intend poaching in the KNP that our dedicated staff, technology and information from communities will lead to your incarceration. We won’t stop until all criminals are removed from society” said Mketeni.

10 December 2019
Visitor management is a vital part of ensuring the best possible experience for all visitors to the Kruger National Park over the coming festive season starting on Friday, 13 December 2019 until Tuesday, 14 January 2020. With this in mind, South African National Parks (SANParks) would like to remind Day Visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) that daily quotas will once again apply at the entrance gates. Visitors are urged to make pre-bookings for their visits prior to their arrival and there are three time slots which they can choose from as follows:
"For busy periods such as the school holidays and festive season, we aim to better manage the volumes that we expect, as well as our visitors’ expectations. The three different time slots are aimed at improving the spread of vehicles and, as far as possible prevent unnecessary waiting periods at gates”, said the KNP’s GM: Communications and Marketing, Ike Phaahla.
- Time slot 1: 05:30 to 07:30
- Time slot 2: 07:30 to 09:30
- Time slot 3: 09:30 onwards
The Day Visitor Quota for the Park is a management tool to prevent overcrowding the roads and facilities and is applied throughout the year although we mostly reach carrying capacity during long weekends and school holidays resulting in us having to turn visitors away. Visitors will be able to book up to 80% of Day Visitor Quota per gate via SANParks Reservations offices on 012 428 9111 and online at (Der Link ist für Gäste ausgeblendet. Um ihn zu sehen, bitte registrieren!) .
Pre-booked day visitors will get preference over non-booked day visitors at the gate but must ensure that they arrive within their booked time slots. Arriving outside the booked time slot, will be regarded as non-booked and therefore will not receive preference and could be turned away. These bookings can be changed as well through SANParks Reservations offices if need be.
Phaala also reminded visitors to read the permit which they receive at the gates because all the rules and regulations of the park are clearly stipulated on these documents. “Day visitors may not bring liquor as a result of the alcohol ban in public areas of the Park. Further, visitors must please also refrain from committing other infringements such as littering, feeding of animals, speeding and alighting from vehicles in places where this is prohibited in the Park. These and other Park rules are emphasized to ensure visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience, while not impacting other visitors, and hence must be adhered to at all times whilst in the Park. Visitor Management vehicles will also be on patrol; providing information to guests, visibility on the roads and law enforcement in the Park;” he advised.
Visitors can report any rules and regulations infringement which they witness to the Emergency Call Centre numbers 013 735 4064/013 735 0197/076 801 9679. It is however important that the following information is provided:
“Tourism monitors will be on standby to attend to areas such as swimming pools; however we would like to also take this opportunity to warn the parents not to allow children to swim without elderly supervision at the pools in the Park to avoid drowning,” concluded Phaahla.
- Vehicle type and colour
- Vehicle registration
- Date and Time of Incident
- SATSA sticker showing vehicle number (for Open Safari Vehicles)
- Details of Incident
- Photographic evidence
- Location of Incident
Visitors should also take note of the following important information:
Guests are encouraged to continuously provide feedback on their experience to customer.care@sanparks.org
- Day Visitor pre-bookings are subject to a non-refundable booking fee of R46 per adult and R23 per child.
- Day Visitors who have pre-booked will still be required to pay Conservation Fees or use a valid Wild Card to enter the Park. The Conservation Fee for SA residents as well as Zimbabwe and Mocambique nationals (passport required to prove this) is R100 per adult and R50 per child (between ages 2 – 11). For nationals of Eswatini (previously Swaziland) and other SADC countries, the conservation fees are R200 per adult and R100 per child. For all other guests, the standard conservation fees of R400 for adults and R200 for children applies.
- Guests planning to use Wild Cards are requested to ensure the membership is valid before arrival and this can best be done online at (Der Link ist für Gäste ausgeblendet. Um ihn zu sehen, bitte registrieren!)
- The number and profile of persons (adults and children) on the reservation and actual persons arriving should correspond.
- All guests (drivers and passengers) will be required to identify themselves upon admission (by producing a South African driver’s license, identity document or passport); please ensure you are in possession of one of these documents and have them ready.
- Gate Quotas will be strictly applied and guests without pre-bookings could be denied entry.

We have just had confirmation from our Section Ranger that a young leopard was spotted in the camping side of Berg en Dal Rest Camp.
A word of caution has been sent out and the Rangers will be out at first light to set up a strategy to capture the leopard. In the meantime all campers should be extra cautious.

Leopard update: Rangers are on high alert and confident they will be able to trap a young leopard that was spotted in the Berg en Dal camping site. Tourists and campers are advised to be extra cautious.

UPDATE - Leopard in Berg en Dal:
No change since the last update. A cage has been set up and we hope the leopard will be captured by morning. Meanwhile campers and tourists should be extra cautious.

LEOPARD SIGHTINGS AROUND BERG EN DAL REST CAMP
Staff members and guests staying at Berg en Dal Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park (KNP) have experienced close contact with leopards for the past two days; there have also been random sightings of the predators close to other camps in the southern part of the Park. Management would like to advise guests to be cautious whilst walking around the camps in the Park to limit the risk of a possible confrontation with the animals or injury.
“A young leopard at Berg en Dal is alleged to have killed a bushbuck on Wednesday night near the Camping site; Rangers were out at the first light yesterday to flush it out but found no trace of the cat. A male adult leopard was seen outside the fence and circling the same camp as if stalking something yesterday and this morning. We also received a report from a tourist via social media that a frantic looking female leopard was seen up a tree on S110 gravel road; he later saw a young leopard running towards Berg en Dal as if being chased away”; indicated the GM: Communications & Marketing, Isaac Phaahla.
Phaahla further explained that there was a possibility the leopard sightings were linked because all leopards are highly territorial and these animals could be fighting for territory. Rangers are on alert for any sightings close to the camp and weighing options because any wild animal which roams around in human habitats with people milling around is bound to be dangerous.
“We would like to warn those who habituate the animals such as baboons by feeding them to refrain from such as the animals start staying in the camps hoping for food; thereby attracting predators which places humans under threat and might lead to the destruction of the animals. It is an offence to feed wild animals therefore people must familiarize themselves with the general rules of the Park which are found on the permits they receive at the gates, concluded Phaahla.

Update: Leopard Berg en Dal Rest Camp: The Section Ranger has checked the cage, walked the perimeter of the camp fence and looked at the camera traps. No trace of the leopard has been found. SANParks will give it another night before concluding that the leopard has certainly left the camp. We still request tourists to be vigilant and to report any sightings.

Leopard update. SANParks believes the young leopard spotted in the Berg en Dal camping site has left the vicinity. This after an intensive search and observation operation by Rangers, management and the call for the public to actively participate. No spoor or sighting has been observed thus far. Even though the animal seems to have left, the public is urged to be cautious.
