The Kruger National Park (KNP) Management would like to remind Day Visitors to the Park today, 18 June 2020 to continue to adhere to the COVID-19 Health Protocols as outlined by the government especially on the social distancing aspect when travelling for self-drive excursions. National Parks, of which the KNP is one of opened their gates on 8 June 2020 after the country moved to Level 3 of the lockdown as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in May 2020.
The Managing Executive of the KNP, Gareth Coleman said the general feedback from regular visitors is that they are delighted that the Park is open for them again even though they are not able to sleep over. "We are in unchartered waters with COVID-19 and had to get all hands on deck to make sure that those visiting had a good experience. It was important for us to orientate our colleagues at the front line on the Health Protocols around the virus so that they could assist and safeguard our visitors and employees. The issue of PPE's, training and the recording of personal details of visitors went as envisaged and we are grateful for the massive cooperation from our clients" said Coleman.
The guidelines to adhere to during self-drives in the KNP are as follows:
- Maintain social distancing by at least two metres (2m).
- Notwithstanding requirement that day visitors in one vehicle must be from the same household, limitations on vehicle capacity and the number of occupants have to be firmly enforced upon entry at gates. The restriction is that occupants may not exceed more than 70% of capacity and we request visitors to adhere so they are not turned back at the gates.
- Guests are advised to book in advance (preferably online if possible) in order to assist in planning as strict quota management will apply; with the understanding that booked day visitors must arrive at the gate within that time span.
The time slots below will apply:
Time slot 1: 06.00 to 08:00
Time slot 2: 08:00 to 10:00
Time slot 3: 10:00 onwards- For online bookings, visitors can visit (Der Link ist für Gäste ausgeblendet. Um ihn zu sehen, bitte registrieren!)
- Those who are in possession of firearms should declare them at the gate so that they can be sealed upon entry; break the seal when departing.
"At the moment, picnic spots are only to be used for ablutions as no braaing is allowed under the current regulations. The restaurants and Park shops will be open for takeaways only. Finally, the quota system will be in place at all gates to ensure compliance in terms of numbers inside the park and to enhance visitor experience"; concluded Coleman.

South African National Parks (SANParks) said in a statement it is preparing for a recall of its hospitality staff and for a phased-in approach in the reopening of its overnight facilities in the wake of an announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa that accommodation providers can resume operations in alert level 3.
This is according to SANParks CEO, Fundisile Mketeni, who said the President's address on Wednesday, 17 June 2020 brings good news to SANParks and many nature lovers who for the past three months have been yearning to visit their favourite national park. He said SANParks will approach the opening of its accommodation facilities responsibly to ensure that the gains made by South Africa in curbing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic are not compromised.
Mketeni said the process of recalling back staff in preparation for the reopening is still to commence... "we will then immediately activate the re-training of staff on new operating protocols in line with industry standards. The safety of both staff and guests is critical and we have to ensure that we are in compliance with regard to regulations as well as health standards and protocols. South African National Parks (SANParks) today advised customers that it has not opened for overnight accommodation as per Level 3 lockdown regulations on leisure and interprovincial travel.
Day self-drives in national parks continue to be permissible for residents of the various provinces that the respective National Parks are located in; visitors are urged to book online and to observe all COVID 19 health protocols while in the park – including exiting the park with as much of their refuse as hygienically possible.
Fundisile Mketeni, SANParks Chief Executive Officer acknowledged that the organization is aware that many domestic tourists are eager to enjoy the tranquillity offered by national parks and that they would like to extend the current self-drive opportunities to overnight stays. He urged tourists to be patient until leisure travel and interprovincial travel regulations are implemented.
All overnight bookings for July have therefore been suspended; the public will be advised in due course when bookings open. The organization advised those with overnight bookings to delay their travel and not cancel.
Mketeni concluded by advising South Africans to continue supporting government efforts to minimize the impact of COVID 19 by adhering to lockdown rules. "We are seeing increasing infection numbers and regrettably the loss of lives as well. This is a reminder that a decision to open up our facilities has to be well-considered to ensure our colleagues, tourists and their friends and families' health are not compromised. We all have to be patient and trust the processes and decisions of our leaders during this difficult time, we will announce the dates for the reopening of accommodation bookings in due course".

- ensure that every person involved in the tour wears a mask at all times except when eating or drinking;
- sanitise persons involved in the tour before they enter a tour vehicle, rail or boat;
- frequently sanitise guests during their tour or provide guests or persons involved in the tour with sanitisers for frequent use;
- ensure that during guided activities that require walking, a social distance of one and a half metres is maintained at all times amongst persons involved in the tour;
- ensure that the loading capacity of guided tour vehicles and other modes of public transport complies with the Directions issued by the Minister of Transport in respect of the loading capacity of public transport vehicles;
- ensure that the door handles, window handles, armrests and handrails of all vehicles, rail or boat are sanitised after every load;
- ensure that windows on both sides of the tour vehicles, where applicable, are kept 5 cm open on both sides;
- ensure that all snacks and drinks provided during the tour are pre-packed and distributed following strict hygiene and sanitising measures. Disposable bottles, containers, cups and utensils should be utilised during tours;

The guidelines to adhere to during the intra-provincial travel overnight stay in the KNP are as follow:Coleman concluded by wishing all those who will be in the KNP a safe and enjoyable stay, and to make good memories. We also implore guests not to deposit their litter inside the bins within the parks but to leave with as much of it as hygienically possible.
- Maintain social distancing by at least 2m at all times.

South African National Parks (SANParks) welcomes the lifting of restrictions on inter-provincial travel and reiterates that it has introduced stringent hygiene protocols in an effort to curb the risk of the spread of the COVID-19 (coronavirus).
Remarking after the President's announcement made on Saturday, 15 August 2020, Chief Executive Officer, Fundisile Mketeni said in line with the government protocols and regulations and in the interests of the health and safety of visitors and staff; SANParks will introduce new visitor management procedures to manage visitor volumes in the parks.
According to Mketeni, SANParks overnight accommodation opened to intra-provincial guests on 14 August 2020 in most of its parks and therefore the facilities are already well equipped to welcome inter-provincial guests. He, however, cautioned that new government regulations, as well as SANParks' protocols, are likely to result in restrictions to overnight accommodation occupancies and therefore the public is encouraged to pre-book; walk-in bookings at parks will not be permitted.
"While we understand the frustration that this will cause to those who are impatient to spend time in nature, it is important for all to appreciate the intent behind this decision."
Further information for overnight accommodation protocols will be available on (Der Link ist für Gäste ausgeblendet. Um ihn zu sehen, bitte registrieren!) as regulations are clarified.

18 August 2020
Following the announcement made over the weekend by President Cyril Ramaphosa that the country will enter the COVID-19 (coronavirus) alert Level two with effect from midnight, 17 August 2020 and the subsequent gazetting of the amended regulations, South African National Parks (SANParks) would like to clarify how it will manage overnight accommodation in its various national parks.
This according to SANParks Chief Executive Officer, Fundisile Mketeni who said as economic activities have been gradually opening, a Risk-Adjusted Strategy has been at the core of every sector or industry planning in an effort to save lives. "In dealing with the expected accommodation bookings influx, SANParks has aligned itself with a similar strategy for overnight bookings particularly for inter-provincial travellers to national parks."
Mketeni said the gazette 43620 issued on Monday 17 August 2020 stipulates that all accommodation establishments, restrict the number of persons allowed in such establishments to not more than 50 percent of the facility. "Practically this means that SANParks will be obligated to amend or cancel bookings in parks and camps that are currently booked beyond that capacity and in addition, to reject new bookings that may lead to operating above the regulated 50 percent threshold."
He said that while SANParks understands the inconvenience and the frustration this will create, our reservations team are on hand to assist with regards to reallocating bookings from one camp to another within the same park to ensure that we are operating in adherence to the law at all times.
According to Mketeni, in instances where a paid forward booking has to be cancelled, SANParks will apply a transparent and fair process of LIFO (last-in-first-out) princip "implying that the person that booked earlier will receive preference over someone that booked later."
He said affected guests will be contacted and offered alternative facilities or alternative dates "and no guests will be charged cancellation fees if an eventual cancellation occurs and is due to COVID-19 related circumstances."
In conclusion, Mketeni said this time has called on every person to make individual and collective sacrifices in minimising the risk of the spread of COVID-19. He urged guests to the national parks to appreciate that the regulations and SANParks' own protocols, as inconvenient as they may seem, are towards a greater and common good.

SANParks is aware of the recent surge of payment failures when booking accommodation on our website. An investigation into the matter has revealed that the latest version of the Chrome browser contains a malfunction that causes loss of important information - resulting in the authorisation of the funds without finalization of the reservation.
In cases where no booking confirmation is received within a few minutes, please refer to the email that is sent automatically, and follow the instruction to click on the link provided. This final step assists with the settlement of the payment and secures the reservation. Please note that at no stage is personal information displayed, exchanged or required.

Amongst other hospitality establishments, South African National Parks (SANParks) welcomed the lifting of the travel bans as well as accommodation occupancy limitations. However, these changes imply a "new normal" which is governed by strict health and safety protocols that need to be efficiently observed to keep employees and guests safe.
SANParks made an announcement earlier in the month that it intends to reopen its hospitality operations gradually to ensure optimum readiness to accommodate guests in compliance with new regulations and protocols.
In addition to compliance obligations, several other factors have led to the phased reopening of hospitality facilities chiefly that of the continuing refurbishment of accommodation facilities in some parks. The period of the lockdown provided an opportunity to undertake much-needed refurbishments and as with all of South Africa, reopening plans were based on a widely held assumption that tourism facilities would be allowed reopen toward mid-September; hence most refurbishment plans were geared for completion around this period.
Speaking of the impact of maintenance work on reopening tourism facilities; the CEO of SANParks, Mr Fundisile Mketeni said "we have some logistical challenges with regard to our readiness to resume full operations in some parks. In addition to planned maintenance work, it has emerged that the bulk of units that were unoccupied during the lockdown were damaged mainly by primates, squirrels and bats, however, we are moving with speed to repair them".
Providing further detail to the logistical challenges to resuming full operations, Mketeni stated that the recall of staff and their induction on new protocols could only be undertaken over a period of days - further adding to the delays. He emphasised that the induction is in the interests of the health and safety of both guests and staff. Mketeni went on to say "we had an option of staying closed for all business until we were 100% ready, however with the understanding that our loyal guests are yearning to spend time in nature, the compromise was to introduce a phased reopening of our guest facilities. In this manner, some people would have the privilege of visiting our parks while unfortunately several would be disappointed due to the above-stated reasons" concluded Mketeni.
In the last week, operational teams have worked hard to regularise our ability to function optimally and as such we would like to announce that:
Most of the Kruger camps have reopened and are fully operational, however, Skukuza and Lower Sabie will be operating at minimum capacity until 1 October 2020 and 15 December respectively. Biyamiti, Maroela and Orpen remain closed and their estimated reopening dates are as follows
- The Head Office Reservation Call Centre in Pretoria is now operating at full capacity.
- The online booking system has been stabilised and all technical disruptions resolved.
- The accommodation in the majority of our parks is now fully operational with the exception of Kruger National Park which is the most impacted by continuing maintenance work, will open in a multi-phased approach between August and December 2020.
- Biyamiti: 15 October 2020
- Maroela: 01 November 2020
- Orpen: 07 November 2020
The bulk of guests with affected bookings have been contacted and this will continue until the end of September 2020. These guests are being offered alternative accommodation in other camps within Kruger or assisted in postponing their bookings. Guests who wish to make queries about their bookings are invited to send emails to a dedicated address: Kruger.overbookings@sanparks.org.
Mketeni concluded, "we are aware that trips were planned and paid for a long time ago and others are family traditions, however, due to the real challenges that we face, we urge for patience and tolerance from all guests".

South African National Parks (SANParks), together with Total South Africa and FNB will be hosting the 15th annual SA National Parks Week from 16 to 20 November 2020.
SANParks Chief Executive Officer, Fundisile Mketeni said, "SANParks has postponed the free access week which is traditionally held in September, to November due to the COVID-19 alert level 2 regulations which restrict the number of persons allowed within public spaces. Additionally, we have implemented extra visitor management procedures in the parks to manage visitor volumes in line with regulations to further mitigate the risk of the spread of coronavirus at this time."
SA National Parks Week is an annual campaign that gives all South African citizens the opportunity to enter most of the parks managed by SANParks for free, with the exclusion of Namaqua National Park and Boulders section at Table Mountain National Park. Free access to parks does not include free access to accommodation facilities and other tourist activities.
Every year SANParks aims to increase the number of citizens that are granted free access to national parks during this time. Since we started the programme in 2006, some 551 393 South Africans have been afforded the opportunity to enter national parks, and we want to see these numbers grow.
Mketeni said, "The week in partnership with Total South Africa and FNB is meant to cultivate a sense of pride in South Africa's natural, cultural and historical heritage and a deeper appreciation of biodiversity. It is important for South Africans to visit and know the importance of national parks."
Mketeni highlights the growing need for national parks to be relevant, particularly to young people and communities living adjacent to parks. "Through our Socio-Economic Transformation programmes and our Expanded Public Works Programme, we work closely with communities living adjacent to national parks in order to be more inclusive so we can tackle issues of wildlife crime with their help, afford them more access to parks for cultural use, inform young people about the different career options that parks have to offer and create job opportunities. SANParks hopes to strengthen and enable those communities to reap the benefits of the national parks."

This morning guests and staff are waking up to a horrible sight of the burnt TV room and shop at Letaba camp. The fire was finally brought under control this morning without any casualties. Well done to all involved. Investigations into the cause of the fire have commenced.
