LETABA DAY VISITORS’ AREA CLOSES FOR THE WEEKEND DUE TO RESIDENT LEOPARD
The Kruger National Park (KNP)’s Letaba Day Visitors’ area is temporarily closed as from today, 6 May 2016 until further notice. A leopard has made the site its residence, by moving in with its kill; which it has gradually been feeding on since yesterday.
“For the safety of visitors we decided to close the site for the weekend as the leopard’s paw prints and the recently broken fence indicate it has been roaming around the site. Leopards are territorial animals and would not tolerate any intrusion into their territory therefore we decided to give it space for a few days; and our Wildlife Veterinary Staff will advise on how to deal with the situation next week,” said the KNP’s General Manager: Communications & Marketing, William Mabasa.
The kill is still up in a tree at the site which is currently proclaimed the cat’s stronghold; and some people have reported to have watched it feeding from up there.

Planned upgrades for the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park to the tune of +R17 million begin in 2 weeks in the Storms River Rest Camp, Tsitsikamma. The upgrades are scheduled to start with the entrance gate and administration building. The renovation of the gate aims to introduce a far simpler structure and system for visitors entering the Park’s main gate.
A temporary road was constructed recently to allow visitors to access the Park without hindrance. The gate area will be cordoned off while work on the main gate progresses to allow busses and vehicles easy access.
Noise levels are expected to remain normal and parking space will also not be affected at all by any of the construction work. No heavy machinery will be used and all work is on existing footprint.
Other upgrades that are part of the +R17 million project include a new office block, development around the Big tree and the restaurant area. So says Area Manager for the Tsitsikamma section, Lesley Ann Meyer ‘we have structured construction work with the visitor in mind. All work will adhere to environmental legislation and standards and visitor experience and safety will not be compromised.’
The Tsitsikamma (Garden Route National Park) is among South Africa’s most loved National Parks for its picturesque gorges, rocky coastline, dense mystical forests and rich biodiversity.
Boilerplate: R17 million was granted by the Expanded Public Infrastructure Programme (EPIP)
