South African National Parks (SANParks) wishes to inform all Table Mountain National Parks (TMNP) visitors of the pending trail maintenance that will take place on Lions Head from 7 January 2019 to 15 February 2019. Successful completion of this much needed intervention on the popular spiral trail up to the summit requires full closure of the trail during the maintenance period.
During 2017, a Trail Audit Report for the Lions Head and Signal Hill footpath network was completed. The outcome of the report resulted in recommendations to improve the longevity of the trail, safety of hikers in the area and the environmental protection of the Lions Head and Signal Hill.
Since the inception of the report, the TMNP management has formulated a phased approach to implement the recommended actions. Minor work that would pose the least interrupted usage of the trail has been completed and includes closure of unauthorised pathways and desire lines, directional signage erected to guide hikers along the official trails and completion of the assessment for certification of the climbing infrastructure along the trail.
TMNP will now embark on one of the more intensive phases of the project where the condition of the trail will be addressed.
Kindly note that no access will be permitted to hikers or runners via the track entrance along Signal Hill Drive. This includes the restriction on access after sunset and before sunrise. Due to the maintenance in progress we cannot guarantee the safe passage of visitors along the path way and hence the entire trail will be closed.
Signal Hill will remain open to the public as a viewing point.

04 December 2018
The General Manager: Marula Region of the Kruger National Park (KNP) Lucy Nhlapo officially unveiled four activity vehicles today, 4 December 2018 on behalf of KNP Management; which will be used to transport tourists with mobility challenge on game viewing activities.
The 14 - seater activity vehicles form part of the KNP Visitor Management Plan, and can lift weight up to a maximum of 250 kg.
“KNP aims to enhance the recognition for and appreciation of people with disabilities; including our tourists. We would like to ensure that the Park promotes access whilst creating an inclusive environment which provides wildlife experience for all, said Nhlapo.
During the launch, Nhlapo also indicated that it is a reality that people leaving with disabilities are still being discriminated against in some areas of our society. Some people are born with a disability; some get sick or have an accident that results in a disability whilst some develop disabilities as they age or at some point in their lives. People with disabilities use and enjoy the Park; and this important segment of the market should not be excluded from interacting with nature.
“We believe that the launch of the activity vehicles for people with mobility challenge will increase awareness and understanding as well as improving access to the tourists with disabilities; in particular the wheelchair users for their benefit and enjoyment. We place commitment to equity and diversity and these we can only achieve if we give access to everybody in our tourism offerings, regardless of their physical, intellectual of sensory capabilities”, concluded Nhlapo.
Some of the places of interest which provide Universal Access in the KNP are:
The Rhino Museum at Berg en Dal
The Indigenous Nursery in Skukuza – which provides scent stimulation and sounds that enable visitors to enjoy nature through multiple senses
The accessible Trail at Berg en Dal Camp
The Elephant Interpretive Centre at Letaba Camp
Mr Paul Shabangu from Mpumalanga’s Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport was one of the guests who got an opportunity to test out the new Activity Vehicles for people with mobility challenge. Assisting him are the General Manager: Marula Region, KNP – Ms Lucy Nhlapo and the KNP Lead Fleet Manager, Mr Piet van Wyk. Van Wyk also explained the technicalities of the activity vehicles.
Ms Deliwe Sambo, also from the Department of the Public Works, Roads and Transport also experienced the new activity vehicles for a short game drive.
Mr Du Toit Nkambule, Manager: Office on Status for Disabled People – Mpumalanga Department of Social Development explained the purpose of the event held in Skukuza today. The Department has been instrumental in helping put up the programmes for people with disabilities in the KNP. Other stakeholders who formed part of the formalities for the day and shared their models of compliance on issues relating to employment equity were the SABC and Nedbank Group.

Beetles don't kill the tree, but they leave a fungus in the tree's vascular system. The fungus then blocks the vascular "tunnels", that prevents water and nutrients from moving through the tree.
Implications for you as SANParks tourist:
Use Charcoal.
Do not transport or bring wood into National Parks from known infected areas (Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Gauteng, Bloemfontein, Hartswater, George and Knysna).
Purchase wood from immediate local area.

Visitor management is a vital part of ensuring the best possible experience for all visitors to the Kruger National Park over the coming festive season starting on Thursday, 13 December 2018 until Tuesday, 8 January 2019. With this in mind, South African National Parks (SANParks) would like to remind Day Visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) that daily quotas will once again apply at the entrance gates. Visitors are urged to make pre-bookings for their visits prior to their arrival and there are three time slots which they can choose from as follows:“For busy periods such as the school holidays and festive season, we aim to better manage the volumes that we expect, as well as our visitors’ expectations. The three different time slots are aimed at improving the spread of vehicles and, as far as possible prevent unnecessary waiting periods at gates”, said the KNP’s GM: Communications and Marketing, Ike Phaahla.
- Time slot 1: 05:30 to 07:30
- Time slot 2: 07:30 to 09:30
- Time slot 3: 09:30 onwards
The Day Visitor Quota for the Park is a management tool to prevent overcrowding the roads and facilities and is applied throughout the year although we mostly reach carrying capacity during long weekends and school holidays resulting in us having to turn visitors away. Visitors will be able to book up to 80% of Day Visitor Quota per gate via SANParks Reservations offices and online at (Der Link ist für Gäste ausgeblendet. Um ihn zu sehen, bitte registrieren!) .
Pre-booked day visitors will get preference over non-booked day visitors at the gate but must ensure that they arrive within their booked time slots. Arriving outside the booked time slot, will be regarded as non-booked and therefore will not receive preference and could be turned away. These bookings can be changed as well through SANParks Reservations offices if need be.
Phaala also reminded visitors to read the permit which they receive at the gates because all the rules and regulations of the park are clearly stipulated on these documents. “Day visitors may not bring liquor as a result of the alcohol ban in public areas of the Park. Further, visitors must please also refrain from committing other infringements such as littering, speeding and alighting from vehicles in places where this is prohibited in the Park. These and other Park rules are emphasized to ensure visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience, while not impacting other visitors, and hence must be adhered to at all times whilst in the Park. Visitor Management vehicles will also be on patrol; providing information to guests, visibility on the roads and law enforcement in the Park;” he advised.
Visitors can report any rules and regulations infringement which they witness to the Emergency Call Centre numbers 013 735 4064/013 735 0197/076 801 9679. It is however important that the following information is provided:“We also advise guests to exercise caution when driving around areas undergoing construction such as Skukuza Camp so as to avoid unnecessary accidents”, concluded Phaahla.
- Vehicle type and colour
- Vehicle registration
- Date and Time of Incident
- SATSA sticker showing vehicle number (for Open Safari Vehicles)
- Details of Incident
- Photographic evidence
- Location of Incident
Visitors should also take note of the following important information:Guests are encouraged to continuously provide feedback on their experience to customer.care@sanparks.org
- Day Visitor pre- bookings are subject to a non-refundable booking fee of R43 per adult and R22 per child.
- Day Visitors who have pre-booked will still be required to pay Conservation Fees or use a valid Wild Card to enter the Park. The Conservation Fee for SA residents as well as Zimbabwe and Mocambique nationals (passport required to prove this) is R93 per adult and R47 per child (between ages 2 – 11). For nationals of Eswatini (previously Swaziland) and other SADC countries the conservation fees are R186 per adult and R93 per child. For all other guests the standard conservation fees of R372 for adults and R186 for children applies
- Guests planning to use Wild Cards are requested to ensure membership is valid before arrival and this can best be done online at (Der Link ist für Gäste ausgeblendet. Um ihn zu sehen, bitte registrieren!)
- The number and profile of persons (adults and children) on the reservation and actual persons arriving should correspond.
- All guests (drivers and passengers) will be required to identify themselves upon admission (by producing a South African driver’s license, identity document or passport); please ensure you are in possession of one of these documents and have them ready.
- Due to existing contractual arrangements with Open Safari Vehicles (OSVs), they have paid for the annual operating permit and are authorised to enter external gates 15 minutes before opening time to ensure fair distribution/flow of traffic.
- Gate Quotas will be strictly applied and guests without pre-bookings could be denied entry.

SANParks would like to warn members of the public about a fake “Whatsapp” message advising them that they had won a voucher for accommodation at ADDO National Park. SANParks is not running any accommodation promotion whereby free accommodation is being offered for Wild Card members. Kindly ignore such an advice and do not share your personal details with the individuals who send you those advisories. Investigations into the scam are currently underway.
