According to reports from the South African Weather Services, various parts of the Kruger National Park (KNP) particularly in the far north, will be affected by major rainfall and strong winds over the coming weekend, specifically on Sunday, 24 January 2021, due to the Tropical Storm Eloise. Disaster teams in the park and external role-players are on high alert and monitoring its path as it approaches landfall.
"Our scientists, in conjunction with the South African Weather Services are closely monitoring developments and will advise on whether we need to evacuate camps in the affected areas or not. As a precautionary measure, we have already closed all gravel roads and some facilities in the Pafuri area after heavy rains which fell in the evening of 20 January 2021", said Managing Executive at the KNP, Gareth Coleman.
South African National Parks (SANParks) advises that those persons with bookings at flagged camps in the far north such as Sirheni, Shimuwini and Bateleur Bushveld Camps as well as Sable Hide will be accommodated at Letaba, Mopani, Shingwedzi and Punda Maria Rest Camps.
"Emergency teams are on standby in the park, monitoring the situation and will be activated if there is any danger. We urge tourists to be extra cautious during this period and to call our emergency number for any assistance only on 076 801 9679 or 013 735 0197/4064"; concluded Coleman.

The Kruger National Park (KNP) has made history by appointing its first-ever female Head Ranger, Cathy Dreyer who has an exemplary record in conservation management, law enforcement, people and strategic management competencies.
She starts her new position on 1 May 2021.
Dreyer is currently the Conservation Manager at Addo Elephant National Park (AENP) in the Eastern Cape responsible for both terrestrial and marine areas. Before moving to Addo, she was based in the KNP contributing to the protection and conservation of black rhino in the Intensive Protection Zone (IPZ) of the Park.
She coordinated and participated in the implementation of aerial surveillance, and was also instrumental in drawing up protection strategies and patrol tactics aimed at protecting black rhino in the KNP. Prior to this, Ms Dreyer was employed by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency as the Conservation Manager for the Great Fish River Nature Reserve home to one of the key black rhino populations in South Africa.
Ms Dreyer's appointment comes soon after holding a successful strategy session held in March with stakeholders and employees on preparing a Rhino Implementation Plan aimed at arresting the decline of the rhino population with KNP.
The Managing Executive of the KNP, Gareth Coleman congratulated Dreyer on her new appointment saying, "we are looking forward to welcoming Cathy back to the KNP. She is no stranger to the challenges faced by the Ranger corps in conservation management and fighting wildlife crime. She brings with her a wealth of conservation management experience and in conserving rhinos in particular. She has proven herself as a dedicated conservationist and a law enforcement officer".
He added that "SANParks is currently preoccupied with developing effective management strategies to protect our Rhino population and to more effectively manage conservation and wildlife crime in the park in general. A Turnaround Plan - which addresses these and other key security, infrastructure and human capital challenges is being widely canvassed and consulted upon. Cathy will be key in driving these changes. We know that she will bring new energy, ideas and passion to our dedicated team within the Park" he concluded.
Ms Dreyer expressed her joy at being the successful candidate saying "I am incredibly humbled by this opportunity, particularly at a time when the Kruger National Park is vigorously and earnestly working on its Turnaround Plan. Leadership is a privilege and I look forward to working alongside the dedicated, committed and passionate Ranger corps and conservation management teams in the Park." Concluded Dreyer.
Cathy is replacing Ken Maggs who was with SANParks for nearly four decades and retired.

South African National Parks (SANParks) today, 18 April 2021 reported the death of a suspected poacher in the Kruger National Park (KNP) and the arrest of one accomplice which took place yesterday on 17 April. The deceased and his accomplices were fleeing from Rangers when they ran into a breeding herd of elephants.
Field Rangers were out on a routine patrol at the Phabeni area when they detected incoming spoor and made a follow up in pursuit of the suspects. Three individuals were spotted by the Rangers and attempted to run away, but Rangers requested back-up from the Airwing and K9 unit. When they realised they had been spotted, the suspected poachers dropped an axe and a bag with their provisions in an attempt to escape from the rangers.
One of the suspects was arrested following assistance from the Airwing and K9 unit. The suspect informed the rangers that the group had run into a herd of elephants and was not sure if his accomplice had managed to escape. The Rangers discovered his accomplice badly trampled and who had unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The third suspect is said to have been injured in the eye but continued to flee. A rifle was recovered and the case was referred to police, whom together with the pathology team attended to the scene.
The Managing Executive of the KNP, Gareth Coleman congratulated all those involved in the arrests “we are proud of the teamwork and dedication of our Rangers Corp, our aviators and the K9 unit. It is unfortunate that a life was unnecessarily lost. Only through discipline, teamwork and tenacity will we be able help stem the tide of rhino poaching in KNP.”
The search for the third suspect is underway. Coleman has called on the community members living close to the KNP to assist with information. “The campaign against poaching is the responsibility of all us; it threatens many livelihoods, destroys families and takes much needed resources to fight crime which could be used for creating jobs and development” concluded Coleman.

SANParks - Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) can confirm that the Rhodes Memorial Fire was reported at 09:00 AM. TMNP/contract wildfire crews (NCC Wildfire) from the Newlands Firebase were dispatched immediately. The location of the fire was immediately above Philip Kgosana Drive/Hospital Bend. After the initial investigation, it is surmised that the origin of the fire is from a vacated vagrant fire. Due to the extreme Fire Danger Index for today, which is Red with temperatures of 36 degrees noted and an extremely low relative humidity of under 10%, the fire spread rapidly in the direction of Rhodes Memorial. One of the major contributors to the rapid rate of spread was the very old pine trees and their debris. The fire created its own wind that further increased the rate of spread. The excessive amount of smoke and related updrafts made it impossible for the aerial support to slow the rate of spread.
Philip Prins, TMNP Fire Manager, said "we currently have 129 firefighters on the line from TMNP, NCC Wildfires, Working on Fire, City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services; Volunteer Wildfire Services. More firefighting crews will join us shortly. TMNP and the City of Cape Town have four helicopters currently operating in the area. There are numerous other water tankers and firefighting vehicles on the scene managed between TMNP and the City of Cape Town.'
It can be confirmed that the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant has unfortunately burnt down. The fire has also spread to the veld above the University of Cape Town (UCT) upper campus and to areas below the M3. Roads have been closed and please be vigilant when travelling through these areas.

The South African National Parks (SANParks) today announced another well-executed operation that led to the arrest of three suspected poachers on Wednesday, 21 April 2021 in the Crocodile Bridge Section of the Kruger National Park (KNP). A high calibre hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment were seized during the successful operation.
Rangers detected the spoor of three individuals early in the morning and made a follow up in pursuit of the suspected rhino poachers. The Airwing Unit was called in to support the ground teams using a helicopter and a fixed-wing airplane; soon thereafter one suspect was arrested. After following tracks throughout the day, the two remaining suspects were apprehended in the late afternoon and handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further handling.
Yesterday was another long day in the field for our anti-poaching teams in difficult conditions but they displayed tenacity and excellent teamwork. We congratulate all who were involved. The arrests bring the number of those arrested in the past five days to eight. In this time three rifles, ammunition and hunting equipment were seized boosting the morale of the Rangers, Aviators and K9 Unit in the battle to protect and conserve rhinos in the KNP which has borne the brunt of the attack from international rhino poaching syndicates.
The suspects will appear in court in due course.
