South African National Parks (SANParks) Scientists studying the Olifants River within the Kruger National Park, part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park have been monitoring water quality effects on the health of the aquatic ecosystem. Recent satellite observations are suggesting the rapid build-up of a potential harmful Algal Bloom in the lower Olifants River, as it flows through a deep gorge with a large Nile crocodile population before it enters the large Massingir Dam in the Republic of Mozambique.
The scientists have embarked on a detailed monitoring program to assess the impacts of this algal bloom on the crocodile population and the aquatic ecosystem more broadly.
These conditions have arisen due to a combination of several factors including very high lake levels in Massingir Dam following the good summer rains, increased water clarity allowing mono-cellular algae to access sunlight and build up large biomass; high nutrient inputs (pollution) from upstream catchment areas; and the warm early winter temperatures experienced that increase surface water temperature.
SANParks is also keeping park and catchment management partners informed in South Africa and Mozambique and through this collaboration intends to mitigate the negative impacts of this event on the health of the ecosystem of the Olifants River and those that depend on its resources downstream.
Head of Conservation and Area Integrity Management in Kruger National Park, Mr Danie Pienaar says "we have learned valuable scientific lessons about the mechanisms giving raise to Pansteatitis outbreaks and the impact on the park's crocodile population following the outbreak of this disease in 2008 - 2009. This time we are at least forewarned and will do proactive monitoring and research to track the situation together with our Mozambican colleagues.'

Relocation of SANParks Datacentre to Teraco: SANParks Systems Downtime 2 – 4 July 2021
In line with our organisational objective to improve our guest and employee’s IT experience, SANParks IT servers, which are currently in the Main Server room (Data Centre) at SANParks Head Office, Groenkloof will be moving to a secure world-class hosting site (Teraco) in Isando, Johannesburg during the weekend of 2 - 4 July 2021. This move will mean improved uptime and security for our servers and our services to you, our users, and our guests. This move is Phase 2 of our network upgrade project, which most of you have been part of over the last 2 years. Our network services were moved to Teraco almost 2 years ago, and with the national network improvement project almost complete, it is now time to relocate the server infrastructure to the same location
This project is a large project and, unfortunately, cannot be done in stages. All our IT systems will have to move simultaneously, which means all IT systems will be unavailable from Friday, 8 pm on the 2nd of July 2021, until 10 pm Sunday, 4th July 2021.
How will this affect you as a user and SANParks guests?
All servers, systems and services will be down from Friday, 2 July 2021 at 20:00 – Sunday, 4 July 2021 at 22:00.
You will not have access to the following SANParks systems and services during the above period as the following systems will be down:
• RoomSeeker (Reservation and Front Office system)
• SANParks Online Reservation system (will be down as it is dependent on the Reservation System being online which will be down during this period)
• SANParks email will be down for a lot of users, but there is a workaround available (see lower down in this communication). No external emails will be lost as all emails will be queued.
• Great Plains (Financial System)

Following the announcement made on Sunday, 27 June 2021, by President Cyril Ramaphosa, that the country will move to Adjusted Level Four with effect from Monday, 28 June 2021 and the subsequent gazetting of the amended regulations, South African National Parks (SANParks) would like to inform guests of key changes to its hospitality and tourism services in its various national parks.
This according to SANParks Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr Luthando Dziba who said a Risk-Adjusted Strategy has been at the core of every sector or industry planning in an effort to save lives. "SANParks in complying with government regulations has made the requisite amendments particularly for travellers to our national parks originating from the Gauteng province."
The rules for clients from Gauteng with exiting reservations are as follows:
All gatherings at beaches and picnic sites within the national parks are prohibited. The dining facilities and restaurants within the national parks will operate on the basis of off-site consumption and therefore no sit-down dining will be allowed. More information will be shared on the compliance with the regulations regarding occupancy levels once SANParks has finalised the necessary logistics.
- There will not be a blanket cancellation of bookings for guests residing in Gauteng. Instead, those holding current reservations valid for the period 28 June to 11 July 2021 will be contacted directly via telephone and email to establish whether their bookings should be postponed or cancelled.
- Guests are also encouraged to contact reservations on 012 428 9111 or 082 233 9111 or email reservations@sanparks.org if they are unsure about their current reservation.
- Where cancellation is the only option, cancellation fees will not be charged and clients will be provided with the option to claim a full refund or for their deposit to be kept on credit-on-hold for use on future reservations.
- Gauteng residents currently in occupation of SANParks accommodation facilities will be permitted to remain in the parks for the duration of their reserved stay as the regulations permit for persons who were outside the province when the regulations came into force, a once-off trip to return to their places of residence.
Dziba said that while SANParks understands the inconvenience and the frustration this may create, our reservations and park teams on the ground are on hand to assist in adherence with the law.
In conclusion, Dziba said the spread of COVID-19 has affected all South Africans and in order to minimise the spread every one of us has to make sacrifices. He urged guests to the national parks to appreciate that the regulations and SANParks own protocols, as inconvenient as they may seem, are towards a greater and common good.

The Kruger National Park (KNP), in conjunction with the farming enterprise and fresh produce company ZZ2, handed over parcels to Mahlathi home-based care in Giyani; in honour of the late former President, Nelson Mandela, on 16 July 2021. Sunday, 18 July 2021 was \Nelson Mandela's birthday, and South Africa will be celebrating his life throughout the month.
This year's theme for the Nelson Mandela International Day is " one hand can feed another" which seeks to empower communities everywhere; whist the Nelson Mandela Day goals for 2019-2029 are Education and Literacy, Food and Nutrition, Shelter, Sanitation and Active Citizenship.
" The idea was to spend the whole day at the facility in an effort to mobilise the community, in particular, the youth to raise awareness on issues such as environmental crime, socio-economic issues etc., however, due to COVID 19 restrictions it was not possible. We however still committed ourselves that as a tribute to our beloved Madiba, we should share the little we have with the Mahlathi home-based care centre, which is in need of basic necessities as it caters for about 90 community members of various ages on daily basis," said KNP's General Manager of Communications and Marketing, Isaac Phaahla.
As an organization, the KNP donated 50kg of meat and 90 x 5kg soft porridge whilst the sponsor, ZZ2 sponsored approximately 48 bags of fresh veggies (potatoes, cabbages, beetroot, butternuts, onions, and tomatoes) as well as 100kg mealie meal and 8 bags of chicken meat to the facility.
"Mandela will forever remain an inspiration to nations all over the world, and the coronavirus situation has brought an opportunity for us as a country to show more empathy and care for one another no matter how small the gesture is," concluded Phaahla.
People around the world can devote at least 67 minutes to a good cause; one minute for each year Mandela devoted to worthy causes since he began his struggle for the liberation of all South Africans, from political, social and economic division.

South African National Parks (SANParks) and security partners in the Greater Kruger Region are jointly implementing a range of interventions as part of an integrated wildlife management approach to counter the effects of wildlife crime; in particular rhino poaching. As part of several initiatives, certain entities have embarked on strategic dehorning of selected rhinos in the Greater Kruger Protected Area landscape; and these are ongoing.
Kruger National Park (KNP) has implemented a range of integrated management actions to minimise the impact of rhino poaching such as:
The parties in the Greater Kruger landscape are committed to ensuring the survival of these species and will continuously communicate and innovate for the benefit of the ecosystem and protection of key species. SANParks, Provincial Parks in Limpopo (LEDET) and Mpumalanga (MTPA) as well as other private reserves within the Greater Kruger area have approved the initiative. The Greater Kruger parties will evaluate the effect of the integrated management response on an ongoing basis, and use the results and outcomes to adapt management approaches to the poaching scourge.
- Strategic dehorning of rhino in certain core areas of the KNP.
- Strengthening security measures by deploying more SANDF and SAPS patrols to conduct random stop and search operations within the KNP.
- Specialised radar, airborne and other detection technologies to even track poachers on foot.
- Highly trained tracker dogs and hounds to track suspected poachers in the bush.
- Continue to brief the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on the state of wildlife crime. It has been established that the loss of a cow has a compound effect since it also includes the loss of a dependant calf and future calves. The compound effect is part of various factors that affect the population growth of rhinos apart from the immediate disruptive effect of poaching. The cows are extremely important for the overall population performance and need to be protected by introducing stiffer sentences in incidents where they have been poached for their horn and a calf is left destitute.
"These measures are not new in the fight against the scourge of poaching but we are intensifying them to render the incursions ineffective and counter the infiltration of our Rangers Corps by criminal syndicates. The courts have imposed stiff sentences in recent trials which is welcome as it shows the seriousness of the crimes and the threat posed by the criminal syndicates to the fauna and flora of South Africa," said the Managing Executive of the KNP, Gareth Coleman.
SANParks appreciates the tourists that have reported suspicious characters which have led to successful arrests and continue to encourage communities and other members of society to assist with information so that we can get on top of this criminality. Since the beginning of July 2021, KNP has had 10 successful arrests with 7 high calibre firearms confiscated. Â It is clear that risks are increasing for poachers that dare to venture into the KNP.

South African National Parks (SANParks) will be going cash free from 1 September 2021. The cash free payment system will be implemented in a two-phased approach with several parks implementing from the 2021/22 financial year and the remaining parks implementing the system in the 2022/23 fiscal year.
SANParks' Chief Financial Officer, Dumisani Dlamini says, "from 1 September, cash will no longer be accepted as a method of payment in some of the parks. SANParks clients will be encouraged to make use of pre-booking payment systems and/or speed point payment systems in parks. All trade and tourism activities will be cash free and therefore cash will not be accepted."
According to Dlamini, with the cash free system, emphasis is placed on minimising the risk associated with the handling of cash by staff but above all improving customer convenience is key as the cash free payment system will reduce the contact time at entry points particularly during peak times: "This will cut down on queueing time and increase the time for visitors to enjoy the parks."
He said out of a total of 20 national parks spread across the seven provinces of the country with the exception of KwaZulu-Natal and North West, 12 national parks will go cash free from 1 September 2021. These include Garden Route (consisting of Knysna, Wilderness and Tsitsikamma), Agulhas, Richtersveld and Namaqua in the Northern Cape, Table Mountain, Tankwa Karoo, West Coast in the Western Cape, Mountain Zebra, Camdeboo, Addo Elephant in the Eastern Cape as well as Mapungubwe in Limpopo and Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State.
"This is a step towards environmental responsibility and promotes ease of use, visit a cash free park today and #LiveYourWild," concluded Dlamini.

In another victory for cross-border conservation, a series of successful wildlife translocations saw 27 Zebra and 62 blue wildebeest safely making the 1 250 km journey from Kruger National Park in South Africa to Zinave National Park in Mozambique. These new arrivals are welcome additions to the more than 2 300 reintroduced animals that are now thriving under the restoration and management programmes being implemented in Zinave.
Since 2018, more than 700 animals have been translocated under a donation from South Africas Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to the Ministry of Land and the Environment in Mozambique, as they work together, supported by Peace Parks Foundation, to restock and rebuild key parks within the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area.
"The translocation of species from the Kruger National Park to the Zinave National Park in Mozambique is an important indication of how South Africa's conservation success is contributing to the rewilding of Africa," said the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Barbara Creecy. "The success of ongoing cross-border collaborations is an outstanding example of how African countries are working together to solve conservation problems and grow the eco-tourism sector."
The 2-million-hectare world-renowned Kruger National Park, managed by South African National Parks, offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. With more than 147 mammal species thriving in abundant numbers as a result of many years of expert conservation management and protection strategies, the park is well-positioned to support the restoration of decimated protected areas in neighbouring southern African countries.
The restoration of Zinave National Park has been one of southern Africa's most remarkable conservation success stories. After decades of human impacts severely disrupted the 408 000ha Park's natural ecosystems and healthy wildlife populations, work began on restoring Zinave to its former glory in 2016, with the signing of a co-management agreement between Mozambique's National Administration of Conservation Areas and Peace Parks. Through this partnership, significant investment has been directed towards enhancing conservation management, anti-poaching, infrastructure development, tourism development and community development interventions in the Park.
Today, thanks to wildlife donations from South Africa and Zimbabwe and through restocking from other areas in Mozambique, Zinave now boasts 13 species including impala, reedbuck, waterbuck, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, sable and elephant. Thriving in their safe and plentiful habitat, these reintroduced populations have more than doubled in numbers to close to 6 000 animals. With the herbivore populations flourishing, the first predators a clan of four spotted hyenas were reintroduced into the park at the end of 2020 and have already produced their own offspring.
"It is heartening to see how healthy populations of wildlife have stimulated the potential for increased tourism and related income opportunities in and around Zinave. The Park is set to become a major contributor to Mozambique's eco-tourism economies. We highly value the cross-border partnerships that we have with our governmental partners in South Africa and with Peace Parks Foundation. It is a wonderful example of how regional partnerships can contribute to building a more prosperous future for southern Africa and its people," said the Minister of Land and the Environment in Mozambique, Ms Ivete Maibaze.
Kruger and Zinave national parks respectively form the most western and eastern anchor parks of a vital cross-border wildlife corridor within the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area. Wildlife monitoring has identified various species, such as elephants, lions and wild dogs, which are using this transfrontier migration route to access water, food and breeding grounds. Ensuring healthy and protected ecosystems in these areas is therefore not only significant to the parks, but to the environmental well-being of the region, its natural resources and human development.
