Another Successful Anti-Poaching Operation in the Kruger National Park

Zitat

(Der Link ist für Gäste ausgeblendet. Um ihn zu sehen, bitte registrieren!)

The South African National Parks (SANParks) today announced another well-executed operation that led to the arrest of three suspected poachers on Wednesday, 21 April 2021 in the Crocodile Bridge Section of the Kruger National Park (KNP). A high calibre hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment were seized during the successful operation.

Rangers detected the spoor of three individuals early in the morning and made a follow up in pursuit of the suspected rhino poachers. The Airwing Unit was called in to support the ground teams using a helicopter and a fixed-wing airplane; soon thereafter one suspect was arrested. After following tracks throughout the day, the two remaining suspects were apprehended in the late afternoon and handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further handling.

Yesterday was another long day in the field for our anti-poaching teams in difficult conditions but they displayed tenacity and excellent teamwork. We congratulate all who were involved. The arrests bring the number of those arrested in the past five days to eight. In this time three rifles, ammunition and hunting equipment were seized boosting the morale of the Rangers, Aviators and K9 Unit in the battle to protect and conserve rhinos in the KNP which has borne the brunt of the attack from international rhino poaching syndicates.

The suspects will appear in court in due course.

UPDATE 20:50 - All lives are safe. It seems the fire was caused by lightning. The guests were not close to the unit at the time. The fire is under control. The camp staff and ranger staff are there. The units next to the burning unit are safe. The guests occupying the burnt unit had a chronic condition and the medicines were in the burned unit. The camp manager arranged for the guests to depart.

SANParks Provides Alert on Potential Harmful Algae Bloom in Lower Olifants River

Zitat

(Der Link ist für Gäste ausgeblendet. Um ihn zu sehen, bitte registrieren!)

South African National Parks (SANParks) Scientists studying the Olifants River within the Kruger National Park, part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park have been monitoring water quality effects on the health of the aquatic ecosystem. Recent satellite observations are suggesting the rapid build-up of a potential harmful Algal Bloom in the lower Olifants River, as it flows through a deep gorge with a large Nile crocodile population before it enters the large Massingir Dam in the Republic of Mozambique.

The scientists have embarked on a detailed monitoring program to assess the impacts of this algal bloom on the crocodile population and the aquatic ecosystem more broadly.

These conditions have arisen due to a combination of several factors including very high lake levels in Massingir Dam following the good summer rains, increased water clarity allowing mono-cellular algae to access sunlight and build up large biomass; high nutrient inputs (pollution) from upstream catchment areas; and the warm early winter temperatures experienced that increase surface water temperature.

SANParks is also keeping park and catchment management partners informed in South Africa and Mozambique and through this collaboration intends to mitigate the negative impacts of this event on the health of the ecosystem of the Olifants River and those that depend on its resources downstream.

Head of Conservation and Area Integrity Management in Kruger National Park, Mr Danie Pienaar says "we have learned valuable scientific lessons about the mechanisms giving raise to Pansteatitis outbreaks and the impact on the park's crocodile population following the outbreak of this disease in 2008 - 2009. This time we are at least forewarned and will do proactive monitoring and research to track the situation together with our Mozambican colleagues.'

SANParks Announces Changes to Hospitality and Tourism Services For Lockdown Adjusted Level Four

Zitat

(Der Link ist für Gäste ausgeblendet. Um ihn zu sehen, bitte registrieren!)

Following the announcement made on Sunday, 27 June 2021, by President Cyril Ramaphosa, that the country will move to Adjusted Level Four with effect from Monday, 28 June 2021 and the subsequent gazetting of the amended regulations, South African National Parks (SANParks) would like to inform guests of key changes to its hospitality and tourism services in its various national parks.

This according to SANParks Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr Luthando Dziba who said a Risk-Adjusted Strategy has been at the core of every sector or industry planning in an effort to save lives. "SANParks in complying with government regulations has made the requisite amendments particularly for travellers to our national parks originating from the Gauteng province."

The rules for clients from Gauteng with exiting reservations are as follows:
  • There will not be a blanket cancellation of bookings for guests residing in Gauteng. Instead, those holding current reservations valid for the period 28 June to 11 July 2021 will be contacted directly via telephone and email to establish whether their bookings should be postponed or cancelled.
  • Guests are also encouraged to contact reservations on 012 428 9111 or 082 233 9111 or email reservations@sanparks.org if they are unsure about their current reservation.
  • Where cancellation is the only option, cancellation fees will not be charged and clients will be provided with the option to claim a full refund or for their deposit to be kept on credit-on-hold for use on future reservations.
  • Gauteng residents currently in occupation of SANParks accommodation facilities will be permitted to remain in the parks for the duration of their reserved stay as the regulations permit for persons who were outside the province when the regulations came into force, a once-off trip to return to their places of residence.
All gatherings at beaches and picnic sites within the national parks are prohibited. The dining facilities and restaurants within the national parks will operate on the basis of off-site consumption and therefore no sit-down dining will be allowed. More information will be shared on the compliance with the regulations regarding occupancy levels once SANParks has finalised the necessary logistics.

Dziba said that while SANParks understands the inconvenience and the frustration this may create, our reservations and park teams on the ground are on hand to assist in adherence with the law.

In conclusion, Dziba said the spread of COVID-19 has affected all South Africans and in order to minimise the spread every one of us has to make sacrifices. He urged guests to the national parks to appreciate that the regulations and SANParks own protocols, as inconvenient as they may seem, are towards a greater and common good.

Please note:

In order to comply with, and in preparation of the Adjusted Alert Level 4 Regulations, we will currently not be accepting new bookings for stays in our national parks for the dates between, and including 28 June – 11 July 2021. KNP honours Mandela through Charity

Zitat

(Der Link ist für Gäste ausgeblendet. Um ihn zu sehen, bitte registrieren!)

The Kruger National Park (KNP), in conjunction with the farming enterprise and fresh produce company ZZ2, handed over parcels to Mahlathi home-based care in Giyani; in honour of the late former President, Nelson Mandela, on 16 July 2021. Sunday, 18 July 2021 was \Nelson Mandela's birthday, and South Africa will be celebrating his life throughout the month.

This year's theme for the Nelson Mandela International Day is " one hand can feed another" which seeks to empower communities everywhere; whist the Nelson Mandela Day goals for 2019-2029 are Education and Literacy, Food and Nutrition, Shelter, Sanitation and Active Citizenship.

" The idea was to spend the whole day at the facility in an effort to mobilise the community, in particular, the youth to raise awareness on issues such as environmental crime, socio-economic issues etc., however, due to COVID 19 restrictions it was not possible. We however still committed ourselves that as a tribute to our beloved Madiba, we should share the little we have with the Mahlathi home-based care centre, which is in need of basic necessities as it caters for about 90 community members of various ages on daily basis," said KNP's General Manager of Communications and Marketing, Isaac Phaahla.

As an organization, the KNP donated 50kg of meat and 90 x 5kg soft porridge whilst the sponsor, ZZ2 sponsored approximately 48 bags of fresh veggies (potatoes, cabbages, beetroot, butternuts, onions, and tomatoes) as well as 100kg mealie meal and 8 bags of chicken meat to the facility.

"Mandela will forever remain an inspiration to nations all over the world, and the coronavirus situation has brought an opportunity for us as a country to show more empathy and care for one another no matter how small the gesture is," concluded Phaahla.

People around the world can devote at least 67 minutes to a good cause; one minute for each year Mandela devoted to worthy causes since he began his struggle for the liberation of all South Africans, from political, social and economic division.

South African National Parks (SANParks) and security partners in the Greater Kruger Region are jointly implementing a range of interventions as part of an integrated wildlife management approach to counter the effects of wildlife crime; in particular rhino poaching. As part of several initiatives, certain entities have embarked on strategic dehorning of selected rhinos in the Greater Kruger Protected Area landscape; and these are ongoing.

Kruger National Park (KNP) has implemented a range of integrated management actions to minimise the impact of rhino poaching such as:
  • Strategic dehorning of rhino in certain core areas of the KNP.
  • Strengthening security measures by deploying more SANDF and SAPS patrols to conduct random stop and search operations within the KNP.
  • Specialised radar, airborne and other detection technologies to even track poachers on foot.
  • Highly trained tracker dogs and hounds to track suspected poachers in the bush.
  • Continue to brief the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on the state of wildlife crime. It has been established that the loss of a cow has a compound effect since it also includes the loss of a dependant calf and future calves. The compound effect is part of various factors that affect the population growth of rhinos apart from the immediate disruptive effect of poaching. The cows are extremely important for the overall population performance and need to be protected by introducing stiffer sentences in incidents where they have been poached for their horn and a calf is left destitute.
The parties in the Greater Kruger landscape are committed to ensuring the survival of these species and will continuously communicate and innovate for the benefit of the ecosystem and protection of key species. SANParks, Provincial Parks in Limpopo (LEDET) and Mpumalanga (MTPA) as well as other private reserves within the Greater Kruger area have approved the initiative. The Greater Kruger parties will evaluate the effect of the integrated management response on an ongoing basis, and use the results and outcomes to adapt management approaches to the poaching scourge.

"These measures are not new in the fight against the scourge of poaching but we are intensifying them to render the incursions ineffective and counter the infiltration of our Rangers Corps by criminal syndicates. The courts have imposed stiff sentences in recent trials which is welcome as it shows the seriousness of the crimes and the threat posed by the criminal syndicates to the fauna and flora of South Africa," said the Managing Executive of the KNP, Gareth Coleman.

SANParks appreciates the tourists that have reported suspicious characters which have led to successful arrests and continue to encourage communities and other members of society to assist with information so that we can get on top of this criminality. Since the beginning of July 2021, KNP has had 10 successful arrests with 7 high calibre firearms confiscated. Â It is clear that risks are increasing for poachers that dare to venture into the KNP.
