PROHIBITION OF DRONES IN THE KNP
South African National Parks (SANParks) would like to warn individuals against flying of unmanned aerial vehicles (such as drones) either for game viewing, filming, photography or any other purposes during their visit/stay in any of the National Parks, particularly the Kruger National Park (KNP). This practice is illegal as National Parks are legislated protected areas with restricted airspace, therefore a no-fly zone for all unauthorized aircraft systems.
“We have had two incidents reported by tourists in the KNP recently of people flying such aircraft illegally, getting out of vehicles on undesignated areas, interfering in sightings; disturbing and stalking animals; only to feign innocence upon questioning. We would like to inform such people and other drone users that, should they be found flying them in the Park at any time, they will be arrested on the spot and their equipment will be seized”, said KNP’s General Manager, Communications & Marketing, William Mabasa.
Not only is this a contravention of the NEMA Protected Areas Act, but there are also restrictions in terms of the aerial filming rights and therefore an infringement of SANParks’ filming/photography policy. The NEMA Protected Areas Act states that “it is illegal to fly below 2,500 feet above the highest point of any national park, including the KNP, with any aircraft/drone without the express permission of the Management Authority of the particular National Park i.e. SANParks.
“These kinds of incidents can negatively impact on the wellbeing of animals as well as the experience of other visitors. We would like to specifically thank the guests, who reported one of the incidents to the nearest camp. We would also like to encourage all law abiding citizens to report such incidents to the Emergency Call Centre numbers 013 735 5516/076 801 9679 so that these people can be caught in the act”, concluded Mabasa.

Silvermine and Tokai to remain closed to the public
In the interest of public safety, as well as for the protection of the environmental integrity of the Silvermine and Tokai sections of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), park management decided that these two areas will remain closed to the public until further notice.
TMNP management understands that users are eager to access these areas, however they remain very sensitive and unsafe, and public use of these areas are off limits due to:
- Smouldering and burning vegetation still needs to be extinguished and flare ups will occur as stumps and roots burn.
- Standing trees that have been burnt or damaged by the fire are extremely dangerous as they continue to come down in the area.
- Recently burnt veld (as well as adjacent areas) is hazardous as the fire will have burnt roots underground and foot falls may cause serious injuries.
- Unstable slopes may result in rock falls
- Winds and rain may exacerbate the danger with respect to falling trees, branches, rock falls and mudslides
- Hazardous clear-felling operations of the burnt plantation trees are underway by Cape Pine
- Disturbance to surviving animals
- Burnt areas are sensitive as windblown seeds can be damaged and the first emerging plants can be killed by accidental trampling
- Disturbance to sensitive erodible soils
The closure of the burnt areas will be continually assessed and reopening will only be considered once all safety and environmental issues have been addressed. For some areas this may take between six to twenty four months.
TMNP management and staff would like to assure the public that their focus is to secure the areas for the public’s safety and to as quickly as possible rehabilitate the affected sites for future use.
Please assist us by being patient and please remain out of all burnt areas while mother nature heals herself.

Possible march to affect road leading to Phalaborwa Gate
Date: 24th March 2015
The Kruger National Park (KNP) has received notification that there will be picketing in the Phalaborwa area, resulting in a complete shutdown of business around the town of Phalaborwa (except the healthcare and other emergency sectors) tomorrow, 25 March 2015 from 06:00.
As a precautionary measure, guests planning on entering the Kruger National Park via Phalaborwa Gate, are advised that it may be inaccessible as a result. If possible, use alternative routes such as Orpen and Punda Maria Gates to access and exit Kruger National Park until further notice.
