SANParks - Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) can confirm that the Rhodes Memorial Fire was reported at 09:00 AM. TMNP/contract wildfire crews (NCC Wildfire) from the Newlands Firebase were dispatched immediately. The location of the fire was immediately above Philip Kgosana Drive/Hospital Bend. After the initial investigation, it is surmised that the origin of the fire is from a vacated vagrant fire. Due to the extreme Fire Danger Index for today, which is Red with temperatures of 36 degrees noted and an extremely low relative humidity of under 10%, the fire spread rapidly in the direction of Rhodes Memorial. One of the major contributors to the rapid rate of spread was the very old pine trees and their debris. The fire created its own wind that further increased the rate of spread. The excessive amount of smoke and related updrafts made it impossible for the aerial support to slow the rate of spread.
Philip Prins, TMNP Fire Manager, said "we currently have 129 firefighters on the line from TMNP, NCC Wildfires, Working on Fire, City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services; Volunteer Wildfire Services. More firefighting crews will join us shortly. TMNP and the City of Cape Town have four helicopters currently operating in the area. There are numerous other water tankers and firefighting vehicles on the scene managed between TMNP and the City of Cape Town.'
It can be confirmed that the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant has unfortunately burnt down. The fire has also spread to the veld above the University of Cape Town (UCT) upper campus and to areas below the M3. Roads have been closed and please be vigilant when travelling through these areas.

South African National Parks (SANParks) Rangers had their hands full this morning at their entrances stopping users from partaking in their usual day to day activities within the Table Mountain National Park.
This according to SANParks spokesperson Rey Thakhuli who said the park personnel are hard at work trying to put down the fire and most resources are dedicated to the fire... "with users now attempting to go about their normal running, cycling or walking their dogs we will not be able to fully concentrate on the fire especially in the Newlands Forest and Rhodes Memorial zones."
It is for this reason that we urge users to stay away from the following areas Newlands Forest, Groote Schuur Estate, Rhodes Memorial, Devils Peak, Tafelberg Road, Vredehoek and Deer Park sections of the park. That includes all recreation areas below and above Tafelberg Road, which will remain closed until further notice.
However, it is safe to still visit areas in the South and Central sections of the park which includes areas Silvermine, Tokai, Boulders and Cape Point. "Those who would like to access Lions Head and Signal Hill should approach the areas with caution as the emergency personnel are in the area."
Thakhuli said over 400 hectares of land and growing have been damaged up to this far and over 135 firefighters from SANParks, Working on Fire, City of Cape Town, NCC Environmental Services are currently battling with the fire.
He thanked residents and businesses who have responded to a call for donations of food, water, and energy drinks. Donations can be dropped off at the Newlands Firebase off the M3 highway or call Pat Scott for any donations on 079 608 9991.

South African National Parks says there is overwhelming support from Cape Town residents for firefighters currently fighting a running fire in Table Mountain National Park. "Scores of community members and businesses came in numbers, Sunday, 18 April 2021 at the Newlands Firebase to drop off food, water, energy drinks and an assortment of other necessities required," said TMNP Park Manager Frans van Rooyen.
South African National Parks appreciates the gesture and support from Capetonians in this difficult time. This is not an easy fire which will probably see firefighters fighting the blaze for at least three days and all the help received will go a long way for the firefighters. "This is highly appreciated and anyone who still wants to donate may still drop off donations at the Newlands Firebase off the M3 highway", said van Rooyen.
