South African National Parks (SANParks) today announced the arrest of two field rangers suspected of being involved in rhino poaching. The two suspects were based at the Houtboschrand section and are alleged to have shot and dehorned a white rhino in May 2018.
The suspects were arrested on Monday morning as a result of an intensive joint investigation carried out by the SANParks Environmental Crime Investigative Unit and the SAPS. Their arrest follows a report in May in which shots were reported by tourists and a poached rhino carcass was then found with its horns missing. The two suspects had been deployed in the area at the time of the reports.
The Managing Executive of the Kruger National Park (KNP) Glenn Phillips congratulated the investigating team on the arrests “we have a zero tolerance for corruption and criminality within our ranks and are very disappointed at some of our members who betray the trust of all South Africans and nature lovers, we want to warn others that we are coming after you” concluded Phillips. The two suspects will be appearing in court in due course.
Meanwhile three poachers were arrested on Monday by Rangers who had been following suspect tracks for most of the day. The Rangers who were supported by K9 and Airwing reaction teams made the arrests shortly before last light. The suspects were in possession of a heavy calibre hunting rifle, poaching equipment and ammunition at the time of arrest. The suspects will be facing charges related to illegal hunting in a National Park.

South African National Parks continues to lead and gain ground in its rhino campaign efforts. A suspect arrested inside Karoo National Park outside Beaufort West in the Western Cape while allegedly attempting to poach rhino, was recently sentenced in the Cape Town Regional Court to five years’ imprisonment.
The incident took place on 30 August last year when three men from a rhino poaching syndicate in Limpopo province illegally entered the Park with the intention to kill a critically endangered black rhino for its horns. They gained entry by cutting a hole in the electrified game fence and tracked rhino spoor in an attempt to shoot one of the animals for its horns.
SANParks Field Rangers discovered the hole in the fence and tracked the spoor of the three suspects. One of the men, Alexandre Dias Shintlhangu was arrested, while the other two suspects fled the scene despite tracking conducted by SANParks Field Rangers, SAPS members and private landowners. A rifle fitted with a homemade silencer, 13 live rounds, a large axe and various other poaching equipment were recovered.
A case was opened in Beaufort West with the following charges: (1) Conspiracy to commit a crime by attempting to kill a black rhino (Diceros bicornis bicornis) in Karoo National Park. (2) Enter, reside and perform any activity (hunt) in a national park without the written permission of the management authority. (3) Possession of a firearm without holding a licence, permit or authorisation. (4) Possession of ammunition without holding a licence, permit or authorisation.
Shintlhangu’s bail application was successfully opposed and it was also discovered that at the time of his arrest in Karoo National Park he was out on bail on another case. During the investigation a second suspect was identified and arrested in Vaalwater.
On 31 May 2018, Shintlhangu entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the State in the Cape Town Regional Court. All charges against the second suspect were withdrawn pending DNA results.
Shintlhangu pled guilty to all four counts and was convicted and sentenced accordingly: Conspiracy to commit a crime by attempting to kill a black rhino (Diceros bicornis bicornis) in Karoo National Park - five years’ imprisonment. Enter, reside and perform any activity (hunt) in a national park without the written permission of the management authority - five years’ imprisonment. Possession of a firearm without holding a licence, permit or authorisation - five years’ imprisonment. Possession of ammunition without holding a licence, permit or authorisation – three years’ imprisonment. All four counts will run concurrently.

South African National Parks today announced the arrest of 23 suspected rhino poachers in the Kruger National Park (KNP) since Thursday, 19 July 2018, a day when the Rangers Corps lost a colleague in a contact with a poaching group. Respect Mathebula became the second Ranger casualty since 1958 involving a poacher contact in the KNP.
The Managing Executive of the KNP, Glenn Phillips commended the work of the Rangers saying they are resilient in the aftermath of the tragic loss of a colleague “the arrests are a sign that the Spirit of Respect is being honoured by the Rangers Corps. Further to this, the fact that no poachers were wounded or killed in these contacts is a clear demonstration of the professionalism and discipline that embodies our Ranger Corps.
There has been relentless poacher activity since his passing, with 156 activities reported and that includes contacts. We are still making a plea to our neighbouring communities to help us in this fight by exposing those who are exploiting their children, husbands and relatives to illegally hunt rhino. These people do not have the welfare of the communities at heart but are criminals without a conscience and they need to be put behind bars for a long time for their criminal acts” said Phillips.
The 23 arrested suspects were also in possession of 10 high calibre rifles and poaching equipment. They will be facing charges related to poaching and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

South African National Parks (SANParks) today, announced the arrest of a staff member on Saturday, 25 August 2018. The man was employed as an Armed Guard for Technical Services in the Kruger National Park (KNP).
The suspect was arrested on Saturday afternoon, the 25th August along with three others who were taken into police custody after a SANParks Protection Services, Security Guard, deployed at the Paul Kruger gate, noticed four suspicious persons entering the park in a vehicle. The Security Guard notified SAPS officials who were also deployed at the Gate at the time and the four suspects were handed over to the SAPS and taken into police custody.
During follow up investigations by the police a heavy calibre rifle, ammunition and poaching related equipment was recovered. Unfortunately three of the suspects managed to escape from police custody whilst being transported and are currently still at large.
The suspect has appeared in court and was identified as Absalom Manyike. He was stationed at Satara and has been employed by SANParks since 2014. He will undergo the organization’s internal disciplinary process in due course.
The Managing Executive of the Kruger National Park, Glenn Phillips commended the Protection Services for being vigilant but was disappointed that some of the suspects managed to escape from police custody. “We are glad that we have removed a betrayer from our ranks and will wait for justice to take its course. This should serve as a warning to all staff members who are assisting criminals; we will come after you and the consequence is that you will lose your job and go to jail for a long period”
Investigations are still on-going and all attempts are being made to arrest the three escaped suspects.
