South African National Parks (SANParks) today, 03 May 2019 announced a significant breakthrough in the fight against rhino poaching. The arrest of a high profile individual alongside his accomplice, another poaching suspect, was affected in the Tshokwane Section on 1 May 2019, in an intelligence driven anti-poaching operation.
The high profile suspect is a former Corporal in the Rangers Services and was dismissed in 2014, after a disciplinary process on unrelated charges. A high caliber hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment was recovered on the scene.
Reacting to the arrests, the Managing Executive of the Kruger National Park said “we are proud of the work done by all involved in this operation while the world was celebrating International Worker’s Day”. We have been after this particular individual for some time now, and we are happy that he has been captured and we will wait for the law to take its course. We call on the justice system to consider the severe damage that is being done by criminals, not only to the sustainability of our rhino populations but also the long term threat to the tourism industry of this country and mete out harsh sentences” concluded Phillips.
The suspects will appear in court in due course as soon as charges have been formally filed.
In another operation on 02 May 2019 Malelane Rangers, supported by the KNP K9 Unit and the Airwing made contact with two suspected poachers in a follow up operation. The suspects were arrested and a heavy caliber hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment were recovered at the scene.

South African National Parks (SANParks) and conservation partners in the Greater Kruger Region are collaboratively implementing a range of interventions as part of an integrated wildlife management approach to counter the effects of rhino poaching. As part of several initiatives, certain entities have embarked on strategic dehorning of selected rhinos in the Greater Kruger Protected Area landscape.
KNP will implement a range of integrated management actions to minimise the impact of rhino poaching on the population numbers, including the selective dehorning of rhino cows in certain areas in the southern part. This management tool goes hand-in-hand with strengthening security measures, information sharing on incursions and intelligence as well as continuous collaboration with law enforcement agencies. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), is being briefed extensively on the current situation in order to deliver stiff sentences to those found in possession of ammunition, high calibre rifles and trespassing in a protected area with the intention to commit a crime.
It has been established that the loss of a cow has multiple effects since it also includes the loss of a dependent calf and future calves. The multiple effects are part of various factors that affect population growth of white rhinos apart from the immediate disruptive effect of poaching. The cows are extremely important for the overall population performance and need to be protected by introducing stiffer sentences in incidents where they have been poached for their horn and a calf is left destitute.

South African National Parks, on Wednesday, 24 July 2019, announced the arrests of nine poaching suspects in the Kruger National Park since the 20 July 2019. The arrests were effected in three different sections of the park which has borne the brunt of rhino poaching. This serves as a good morale booster ahead of the celebrations of International World Ranger Day on the 31 July.
Crocodile Bridge Section has seen three arrests with suspects found in possession of a heavy calibre hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment on the 20 July 2019.
Letaba Rangers made contact with three suspects who were in possession of a high calibre hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment on the 22 July 2019 adding to the number of more successful arrests in the Park.
Tshokwane Rangers also arrested three suspected poachers in possession of a high calibre rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment on the 23 July 2019.
The three successful apprehensions of poachers were effected with support from the K9 and Airwing teams, it also came with sad news at the loss of one of the K9dogs in the operation, which was later found unharmed much to the relief of the Ranger Corps. These magnificent animals are valuable and have become a big game-changer in the anti-poaching campaign. They are part of the Rangers Corps family and contribute to the success rate of arrests in the anti-poaching campaign.
Glenn Phillips the KNP Managing Executive expressed his appreciation of the hard work that was done by the Rangers Corps, Airwing and K9 Units saying “We are proud of your achievements in the recent past, we salute your commitment and bravery to this campaign. We are happy that it was found unharmed even though it was dehydrated and drained” said Glenn.
In other sad news, Rangers in the Vlakteplaas section have made a grim discovery of the carcasses of 119 vultures next to a poached buffalo. Initial indications are that meat was taken from the buffalo by the poachers, who then laced the remainder with poison which killed 117 white-backed vultures, one hooded vulture and a white-headed vulture.
The poisoning is being investigated by the Park officials with cooperation from the Mozambican officials. Two of the vulture carcasses are being probed to establish the type of poison that was used to kill the birds.
A case has been registered with the police and further updates will follow.

10 January 2020
South African National Parks (SANParks) today announced an encouraging start to the year 2020 in their anti-poaching campaign in the Kruger National Park (KNP). The CEO Fundisile Mketeni congratulated Rangers who managed to arrest seven suspected rhino poachers in the first nine days of the year.
The first group of three suspected poachers were arrested on the 2nd of January 2020 in the Lower Sabie / Skukuza area of the Park after an extended daylong follow-up operation by Rangers supported by K9 and air wing rapid reaction units. During the contact, which happened just before last light, a heavy calibre hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment were recovered.
The second group of three suspects were arrested on the 7th of January 2020 by a joint Stolznek and Pretoriuskop Ranger team supported by K9 and Airwing rapid reaction support. This group were found in possession of a high calibre hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment. In the third incident on the of 9th January 2020, Rangers, once again supported by K9 and airwing rapid reaction elements, managed to make one arrest out of a group of three suspected rhino poachers after a lengthy follow-up operation in the Tshokwane section of the Park.
Mketeni urged communities to continue cooperating with authorities and giving information that can help win this campaign. “These criminals reside in our neighbouring villages and we urge our neighbours to help us save jobs and create opportunities through tourism because people come to the Park to see these magnificent animals and if we lose them through the actions of these selfish individuals, we won’t be an attraction anymore. Congratulations to the entire SANParks team and we thank you for your dedication, obedience and tenacity and we wish you a successful 2020” concluded Mketeni. All suspects have been handed over to the SAPS for further investigation and will be appearing in court in due course.
